Journal of the Malta College of Pharmacy Practice 23 In this paper an overview will be given of how knowledge of pharmacokinetic mechanisms determines which pharmacokinetic characteristics an AED should have. Various clinical factors such as age, underlying physiological conditions and drug interactions will also affect the pharmacokinetics and efficacy of AED medication. It will be shown how by anticipating changes in pharmacokinetics due to possible drug interactions, or alterations in one of the pharmacokinetic parameters, adverse effects and breakthrough seizures may be averted and aid in the choice of optimal AED therapy for each patient.
